Nancy O'Neill's new alphabet book, Then What? Animals From A to Z, is a wild ride into the land of make-believe. Each letter highlights one animal doing something or wearing something out of the ordinary. Here are some examples: a Mouse riding a bike or an Ostrich playing the drums. The pictures depict each creature engaged in the action. The text highlights the appropriate letter by capitalizing it and using a different color in the sentence. The repeated refrain – Then What? – occurs after every few pages. The book ends with a beautiful sequence encouraging kids to explore their imaginations and enjoy the world of make-believe.
Nancy O'Neill captures the inquisitive nature of young kids who often ask why, what next, or then what? Each of the scenarios pictured is sure to elicit smiles from young listeners. Because most of the animals will be familiar to kids, they will quickly grasp the humor of the situations. The rhymes flow effortlessly, making this a great read-aloud. The soft watercolor illustrations are engaging. I could easily see them as stand-alone images for greeting cards or pictures on a child's wall. They are stellar! Then What? Animals From A to Z adds a twist of fun to a traditional alphabet book. As a retired children's librarian, I witnessed many kids engaging in imaginative animal play. This is a book children's librarians and preschool teachers will want to read to their young charges to encourage them to use their imaginations.
