There Will Be Other Summers by Tegan Anderson is a hauntingly beautiful LGBTQ novel about courage and accepting oneself despite what others say. When Asher and Ryn meet in group therapy, they both feel a shift within themselves. Ryn can’t see her, but he can feel her presence, and although Asher’s hearing isn’t what it used to be, she is sensitive to his every move. Both teens struggle to adjust to more than just their deteriorating senses; school and home life have been a shambles for a while now. Ryn has no idea whether his mother is ever coming home, and the divorce between Asher’s parents has taken a heavy toll on her mental health, never mind the bullying she receives because of how different she is. However, as their friendship develops, so do their feelings for each other. Is this love? Asher hasn’t felt loved in so long. But despite their growing closeness, Ryn is hiding a devastating secret; one that might change things between them forever.
Tegan Anderson's There Will Be Other Summers is sweet and melancholic, with the characters’ pain and heartache palpable from the very first page. Ryn’s strained relationship with his mother played a monumental role in his breakdown, and it was hard to fathom how a mother could leave at such a critical time in a child’s life. But then his change couldn’t have been easy for her, and perhaps it was her way of coping. Asher’s mother’s harsh criticism and resentment of her was heartbreaking, too, since all Asher needed was her reassurance and love. But strength and resolve can grow in the most unlikely places, flourishing into something wonderful. I was proud of Asher’s determination to grow despite everything; a lot can be learned from her positive attitude. This is a story of hope and the monumental power of love. Young adults will love There Will Be Other Summers as it is so relatable. I highly recommend it.
