This Case Stinks! by Janice Garden Macdonald introduces readers to Casey, a young detective determined to solve a very smelly mystery at home. The story begins with Casey introducing his family, including his parents, his big brother on Team Green, his baby sister, and his two cats, Toots and Sweet. From the start, Casey invites readers to join him in figuring out who is responsible for the unpleasant smell. The narrative unravels like a case file, asking who caused the smell, what it might be, where it is coming from, and when it began. Each possibility is explored with suspicion, from sweaty sneakers and sour milk to a diaper or even the cats. Casey follows the clues throughout the house, checking different rooms and retracing events, encouraging readers to think along with him. The mystery builds through simple, engaging questions that mirror how a child might investigate a problem.
This Case Stinks! features an interactive writing style that appeals to young readers. The structure mirrors a simple mystery, guiding readers through the investigation in a natural and fun way. The repetition of questions such as who, what, where, and when creates a rhythm that supports early reading skills and encourages participation. The illustrations work closely with the text, offering visual clues that enhance the storytelling and invite children to make guesses before the answer is revealed. Readers who enjoy humor and light problem-solving will find much to enjoy, especially in how the story turns an everyday situation into an imaginative case. Janice Garden Macdonald writes in a style similar to Mo Willems’, blending humor, simple structure, and interactive storytelling for young audiences.
