To Be a Princess: A Story About Pretty Dresses and Being Yourself is written by Anna M. Lydia wore her favorite dress to school. She had her hair just right and shoes to match the pretty dress she was wearing. Some mean girls made fun of her and her outfit in the hallway. Lydia walked away gracefully, not allowing the mean girls to see how their words had upset her. She ran home, uncertain why the mean girls would say so many bad things about her and her pretty dress. What would Lydia do? Would she change from wearing dresses to wearing jeans and shirts like the other girls? Would she be just as mean as the other girls were when she saw them again? Should Lydia behave the way a graceful princess would, or will she lash out?
To Be A Princess is an adorable story that will encourage kids to embrace being themselves rather than following along with what others are doing. It also addresses a positive approach to handling bullying in school. Kids can easily relate to the characters in this book and understand how Lydia feels about the mean girls’ behavior. The illustrations are cute and elaborate on the events in a way that will keep kids’ attention as they read along with the story. I recommend To Be A Princess by Anna M. to young readers, especially those who like to stand out from the crowd and do their own thing, as well as those who face bullying situations in school.
