“Tonight We Fly!” The Soviet Night Witches of WWII by Claudia Hagen is a gripping story that explores the presence of three Soviet women and the amazing role they played in WWII. They were known as the Soviet Night Witches, and they left a significant and exceptional impact on the war. They were the first women to be involved in combat mission, scoring incredible successes as “stealth bombers.” But were they really Russian witches or just well-trained pilots?
This book takes readers into the Soviet patriotic culture in the years before and during WWII, offering powerful insights on the disciplined life imposed on the young boys and girls growing up in the Komsomol groups. The author states that: “Thousands of young women were trained and ready to fight for their country; they just needed to be allowed to do so.” It is in this context that some of the terrific, bravest and most dreaded women to have fought in WWII honed their skills.
“Tonight We Fly!” The Soviet Night Witches of WWII provides wonderful references to Russian history, politics, and culture. Well-crafted, this book paints a very clear picture of the political landscapes of the time, featuring powerful historical characters, political organizations, and emerging cultural traits prevalent during this period. Claudia Hagen’s descriptions will transport readers into the wonderful setting and keep them captivated as they follow the story. It is ingeniously written, well-researched, and utterly exciting.
