Trapped in the Mayan Tattoo by Ronda Pauley is an engrossing read dealing with the seedy, sordid and cruel world of sex trafficking. Maria is a 14-year-old girl who has been kidnapped from her home and sold into sexual slavery. Two FBI agents rescue her and provide her with a new identity, before reuniting her with her father and then relocating them. Abbi Abernathy is the 16-year-old daughter of the two FBI agents, although she never really knew what they did. She has psychic visions or perceptions that help her to "see" things and understand mysterious clues. The rescue mission goes awry and Abbi's mother is kidnapped. Abbi is sent to stay with the Pelletier family for her own safety. Louise is her friend, and has a brother, Lowell. Abbi discovers that the Pelletiers are CIA agents and are working on the case to rescue her mother. Unable to just sit back, Abbi and Louise join Lowell and Miss Hightower in the search. Abbi hacks into a computer and uncovers many layers of horrible information as she attempts to rescue her mother.
In Trapped in the Mayan Tattoo, Ronda Pauley takes on the tragic and sordid world of human sex trafficking in a realistic and open way. This is quite an education for the reader as Ronda delves deep into the underbelly of this ever growing problem. The story portrays both the victims and the various agencies as they attempt to crack these rings, one by one. It is a difficult and dangerous task, as witnesses disappear and there are so many layers of complexity. The book presents the problem in a human, rather than clinical way and lays open the horrendous victim experiences before you. The characters are likable and you need to keep reading as you have to know what the outcome will be. A most intriguing read touching on a very real problem.
