Twilight of Empire: A Resurrection Saga Novel by W.H. Wisecarver is a political thriller that has all the elements a reader looks for, the kind of book that puts the reader on the edge of their seat from the first page. It features an unusual and compelling female protagonist. Senator Andrea “Andi” Jackson knows the accepted version of American history, from winning the Cold War to becoming the world’s banker. But she also knows the country’s secret history and that the vast investment in infrastructure has been done by keeping a whole socio-economic class of underprivileged Americans in perpetual poverty. As a proud daughter of Americans who have stood up to two hundred years of oppression, she is finally in the position where she has to fight the most important battle of her life; the battle to stop The Order from crippling her republic. The most likely ally she seeks out is Kirk Danner who has spent his entire life waging war against the Order, but when he suffers a stroke-like illness, can they summon enough fight against the most powerful enemy of the state?
This is a realistic novel filled with historical hints and vividly captures the American conundrum. The social commentaries are spot-on and the author uses a stream of consciousness to plunge readers into the thoughts and consciousness of the characters, especially Senator Jackson. She is an intelligent character who has found her way from Wall Street to the Senate floor. The writing is gorgeous and it features episodes that are thought-provoking. Readers can find a lot of sense in the social and political commentaries that characterize the writing. W.H. Wisecarver’s Twilight of Empire: A Resurrection Saga Novel is immersive, deftly plotted, and thought-provoking, a book that presents patriotism as the struggle to right the wrongs of history.
