Undomesticated Women: Anecdotal Evidence From the Road by Anna Blake is a travel memoir that follows the one-year adventure of a senior horse trainer going around America. Just shy of being sixty-nine years young, Blake refers to herself as a “gray mare.” Blake gives us a fascinating glimpse into her equestrian world as a horse whisperer/trainer/clinician driving solo with her adorable Cardigan Corgi dog, Mister, to help people better understand and work with their beloved horses. Blake drives independently with her A-frame trailer named Rollin’ Rancho hooked up behind her, which becomes her home and sanctuary through the thousands of miles they traverse. They are accompanied by GPS Woman which sometimes gets them to where they need to be, but frequently gets them humorously lost on dead-end roads.
Author Anna Blake pens a beautifully written memoir that instantly resonated with me as a woman who is 'undomesticated' and doesn’t play by the traditional gender roles. Her storytelling is mesmerizing with a no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point manner combined with dry, ironic wit that had me laughing many times. Her sensitivity and expertise with horses shine through the pages as she guides readers through her affirmative approach. I learned so much about how horses communicate, and also how animals interact with us through calming signals. Undomesticated Women is a thoughtful and insightful memoir that touches on the many social issues every person faces, such as depression, aging, death, nature, and so much more. A powerful and impactful read that showcases a woman of substance!
