Author Biography

Suspenseful tales with complex characters and an international dimension are the hallmark of N. V. Baker’s fiction, starting with her debut novel, vanished. That work was inspired in part by her 13-month overland journey from Bangkok to West Berlin in 1978 – 79, particularly her travels through Afghanistan and Iran when political unrest and revolution simmered. To be released in October 2017, her novella, The Boy in the Suitcase, occurs on a cruise ship in the Baltic. Baker, a former journalist and professor, has published three books of non-fiction, two in the field of presidential/legal studies. She lives in the high desert in New Mexico.

Vanished by N.V. Baker is a moving love story that isn’t at all about the romance. Instead, we are transported to the Middle East and see through the eyes of someone who appreciates the nuances of the local culture. Vanished follows the separate lives of Cassie, who is travelling through the region in the past, and Jack who, in the future, is on a seemingly insane quest to reconnect with her. He fears Cassie might be dead, but that doesn’t stop him from trying to find out what happened to her, especially since he learns that his current wife is the reason that they lost touch in the first place.

Vanished is an artfully crafted story, half of which is set on the other side of the world, but is written with great respect for the culture of the place and time. The suspense is incredible and will keep you turning the pages, no matter how hard you try to stop. After the first few pages, you will fall in love with Cassie and Jack and begin rooting for them; and your heart will break when their hearts break. This round-the-world adventure story is filled with intrigue, mystery, angst, and will probably have you yelling out loud at the characters too. N.V. Baker has skillfully created a love story without all the sappy romance. The book reads more like a mystery novel where your two favourite sleuths are in love rather than a piece of chick lit. I highly recommend this book for its heart stopping suspense, lovable characters, and eye-opening view into the other side of the world.

I couldn't put this book down! Her descriptions of traveling through a simmering Iran and Afghanistan transported me there -- hearing, seeing, tasting, all in the context of a story that takes you on a wild journey and loving and hating and wishing for all the things their characters do. It is not every day you find a book like this!
