Waffles and Pancakes: A Lesson in Friendship is a children’s picture book by Cindy Springsteen. Two hamsters, Waffles and Pancakes, are overjoyed when they are bought by Danny and Griffin respectively. Unfortunately, the hamsters do not have the same experiences with their new families. Pancakes is pampered by Griffin’s family, while Danny’s family can only afford to buy Waffles a tiny box for a house. One day, Danny and Griffin meet at school and decide to have a play date with their hamsters. The hamsters meet again, but Waffles is ashamed that he does not have many toys and a beautiful house like his friend Pancakes. On the other hand, Pancakes envies the love and attention Danny gives Waffles. This meeting helps the hamsters and their owners to alter their mindset and make positive changes.
Waffles and Pancakes is a lesson-filled book that many children and adults will resonate with. The story of Waffles and Pancakes is something we see every day in our schools, neighborhoods, workplaces, and social media. We tend to aspire to what we do not have and forget to appreciate what we do have. Cindy Springsteen does a great job of conveying this message with her creative story. Children will have fun getting to know these characters and learning from them. The book contains beautiful illustrations that depict the characters and their emotions, and the eye-catching colors will grab children's attention. I enjoyed this book and recommend that parents and caregivers read it with their children and discover the importance of friendship, valuing what you have, and being compassionate toward one another.
