Walk the Web Lightly by Mary Pascual is about Naya, a talented young girl who hails from a family of proud yet secretive artisans. Involved with the clothing trade, they use their magic to see a person’s past and future timelines. But Naya believes that using her magic to heal others as a person of science, as a doctor, is a much better way to use her gifts. Her family’s aversion to science discourages her from continuing on this path. But her grandma offers a compromise that gives Naya some hope. If she successfully weaves her soul wrap, then she can go to the science camp that she badly wants to join. Otherwise, it’ll be goodbye to a medical career forever. Naya, being confident of her talent and abilities, feels that she will be able to overcome the challenge, not knowing that unexpected events and a nemesis are lurking behind the scenes, aiming to foil Naya’s dreams and ambitions. Will she be able to prove her worth and protect her family despite disruptions and the machinations of a diabolical force?
Mary Pascual’s artfully descriptive and detailed writing style makes Walk the Web Lightly a fascinating and captivating read with inventive and imaginative settings. Naya is a young person with concerns, thus the story features classic coming-of-age themes that deal with identity, values, relationships, friendships, and decision-making, fleshed out by relatable and interesting characters, some of whom vacillate between the ordinary and magical realms. Character arc is also a strong feature. Naya starts as a typical teen who’s smart, yet stubborn and outspoken. As the story progresses, she gains strength of character, maturity, and emotional depth as she recognizes her self-worth and affirms her right to what she is entitled to, in her own time. As for her nemesis, the reader will easily dislike this creepy and despicable dark character as he constantly schemes and mulls over his premeditated evil actions with absolute greed and selfishness. Highly recommended for Gen Z readers who enjoy intriguing, moving, and insightful narratives with unforgettable settings and characters with heart-stopping subplots that won’t disappoint.
