We Are Legion by J.A. Kampton is set over one day in Thacker Pass, where reports from a lithium mine herald an exposed passage and missing miners as a solar eclipse nears. Wiley's work at McDonald’s shifts when two figures tied to the mine appear after a violent tremor, prompting him, Nick, and Sam to ride toward the pit. Rebecca, returning from an excavation with John and Sarah, describes symbols, a translator, and a door that opened into a chamber holding machinery and human remains linked to earlier disappearances. Their accounts intersect when Wiley’s group and Rebecca’s team confront signs of another species, a hidden craft, and a network of tunnels holding Lucia, a visitor from another world whose history alters their understanding of the mine and the forces active beneath it.
We Are Legion: One Supernatural Day in Thacker Pass; Limbo & Love by J.A. Kampton is a sweeping science fiction epic and the first in its series. The writing is excellent, the dialogue is witty, and the contemporary references are fun, whether it's comparing someone or something to Dua Lipa or the savoring of the seasonal and elusive McRib. Kampton does well in texturizing the mine and giving the underground setting a real feeling of space. The mine’s lower passages, abandoned hard hats, and a shattered viewing panel point to long activity beneath the operation. I love the scenes of the salt tactic, improvised routes through debris, and quick negotiations. All of this shows how the party responds to rising hazards. The entire novel is narrated in alternating first-person points of view, which isn't my favorite, but Kampton makes it enjoyable. Overall, this is a great read, and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
