In What Digs Itself Free by Stoney Brooks, Zap Rogers and his crew made a name for themselves with a highly successful ghost-hunting show, but it began to lose popularity as the market conditions changed among their younger audiences. Struggling to regain popularity, Zap upgrades his equipment and procedures, but their investigations are continually sabotaged by inexplicable sources. Making matters worse, Zap is overwhelmed by mysterious nightmares, weird sightings around the house, and the delivery of a mysterious package. Help arrives when a former crew member returns with new ideas and a deeper understanding of how they lost their appeal and how to win back their audiences. A malevolent entity associated with the mysterious package, however, is stronger than Zap or his team can imagine.
What Digs Itself Free by Stoney Brooks reminded me of some of the television series that have gained popularity across the United States. For example, the current shows Ghost Hunters or Supernatural, not only in subject matter, but also with a storyline that ignites a fuse and builds suspense to an explosive conclusion while simultaneously leaving the reader wanting more. Building and maintaining verisimilitude (a sense of reality) in a horror/supernatural/thriller novel is not easy, but Brooks succeeds effortlessly. The characters are true to life, the settings are described well, and the action, albeit in many instances supernatural, is true to life and easy for readers to imagine. I read this relatively short novel in just two sittings, so it clearly falls into the page-turner category.
