What's In Your Pocket? by Dolores Stedman is an adorable story with a good message for young readers. Andy and his mom went to the toy store to buy a gift for his baby cousin, Timmy. They looked at a lot of toys and Andy's mom found everything cute. Andy decided to pick up a cuddly brown bear for Timmy. As they walked to the front of the store to pay, Andy saw some small cars on the nearby shelves. Andy picked up one of the red cars off the shelf but he knew his mother would not buy it for him. He really wanted it and he knew it would be fun to play with at home. He looked around and saw no one was looking at him. He stuffed the red car into his jacket pocket. He was scared his mom might ask him what was in his jacket pocket but she did not. When Andy reached the car he felt kind of sick. Would he tell his mother about the car?

The story has a good message for young readers and this is the best way to tell children that they should not take anything from a store without paying for it. I like the way Andy musters up all his courage and goes back to the store with his mom and returns the car. The illustrations are as delightful as the story and give the plot a good pace and movement, making it palpable for readers. The character of Andy will be real and relatable to many young readers. Stories like this with a good message and a moral are pertinent for children to read both at home and in school because the concept and the message are clearer when narrated via a story with the help of illustrations and interesting characters.
