For as long as they could remember, the mice of Peaceville have coexisted in harmony, but recently, the presence of a new community member has disrupted that harmony. Goliath is a big bear with an ugly temper. He likes to get what he wants or threatens to damage the homes and property of the helpless mice. The mice do not like this but do not know how best to combat this mountain-sized problem. That is until Wheezy, a little mouse with a big heart, decides to try out an idea he has been working on. Find out if Wheezy’s unusual plans succeed in Wheezy and Goliath by David Mendoza III.
Wheezy and Goliath is a Christian picture book focusing on bullying and some of the best non-violent methods of countering it. Children will instantly fall in love with the brightly colored pictures in the story. David Mendoza III uses a delicate balance of primary colors and sharp images of familiar-looking animals that will engage young readers from the first page. The dialogue is deliberately formatted in bold fonts to enhance readability. Wheezy’s creative efforts to engage Goliath’s positive side will teach the children the importance of perseverance when facing challenges. Mendoza’s story highlights proven bullying prevention methods, like the buddy system. His engaging narrative combines these beautiful elements to create an entertaining adventure in which all young readers can learn to tolerate other people’s shortcomings. I enjoyed this picture book and look forward to more high-quality works from this talented author.
