When Mermaids Rise is a collection of inspirational poetry tackling many different themes and was penned by author Isabel Scheck. In this 35-verse collection, Scheck takes her readers on the life journeys of the titular mermaids, traveling through their personal growth, attitudes put upon them by others, their reactions to these pressures and feelings, and finally their sense of struggles, triumphs and ultimate peace when events are overcome. The collection as a whole serves as a powerful metaphor for women’s empowerment in the modern world, mixed with fantastical imagery and inspiring language usage which gives its overall impact.
Author Isabel Scheck captures short, sharp moments of poignant and precise wisdom throughout this empowering work of poetry focused on the literary character of mermaids. I liked the stark presentation of black pages with white text, which gives a visual kick to the words as though they are rising out of the deep. Each of the 35 verses that make up the overall narrative is quite short and memorable to absorb, but they also build and combine to form an overall storyline and mirror the life’s journey that many women will go on as they struggle with feelings of powerlessness and finding their inner strength in the wider world. The verses are well-timed with good length and inner rhythm, and inspiring word choices that stick with the reader. Overall, When Mermaids Rise is an excellent read for a quick and inspirational pick-me-up whenever life is getting you down.
