Scary sounds drive a young girl from her comfortable reading place on the floor to hide under the bed with her cat. Where in the world could that sound be coming from? She pokes her head from under her bed, and who does she see? The moon. In her room. From the beginning, the little girl thinks the moon seems familiar. The sky is turning dark. It’s time for the moon to go to work. But she looks tired and tells the little girl that it’s hard work hanging in the sky all night. The little girl thinks for a long time before deciding it would be perfectly fine for Moon to rest in her room. But when she turns around to say so, she discovers that Moon is high in the night sky, right where she belongs. That is only a part of the story. You must discover the rest in When the Moon Came to My Room by Nancy Giangrasse.

This book will be read in many a bedroom, night after night. A perfect read-aloud, using delightful rhyme in a very lilting way that tickles the ear. It is also very well designed, with changing font sizes. Of course, not all books need this, but it adds another dimension to this book. Picture books are a collaboration between the author and illustrator. When the Moon Came to My Room is a perfect example. Ira Baykovksa’s illustrations are charming and support the story at every turn. But Nancy Giangrasse takes things further by inserting a lesson so we don’t feel preached to but get the point.
