When You Became You is a story by Brooke Stanton and Christiane West about the continuum of human life. Penned in a way that’s intended to emphasize the different stages of the human cycle and their indistinguishable identity from each other, the book is meant to teach young readers the value of life at any stage. The text takes great care to frequently use the word human in reference to each stage to support the importance of its message. Whether you are a human embryo, human fetus, human infant. human toddler, human child, human adult, or human older adult, you can be sure this book has addressed the value of you in humanity.

When You Became You by Brooke Stanton and Christiane West is written to include a great deal of information which is wonderful for learning but also may be a little too complicated for younger readers. The greatest strength of this book, however, is its incredible visual aspects which made me fall in love with it before I opened the front cover. The color palette is warm and inviting, and sure to entice children and open-minded adults to read it. I found the illustrations to go far beyond just simple interpretations of the words they are connected to; in many ways, they take on a life of their own and tell a richer and deeper story of the book’s motivations. I would strongly urge readers to pick this story up and share it with their young ones who are still in the early stages of the human continuum. I believe you will be glad you did.
