In Whose Lane is it Anyway?, Tom Edgerton talks about the issues between cyclists and motorists on public roads, speaking on road-sharing, infrastructure, and safety. He discusses the need for improved road conditions, with wider lanes and better infrastructure to ensure cyclist safety. Edgerton leans into the importance of defensive riding, visibility, and adherence to traffic rules, as well as wearing appropriate gear like helmets and lights. Edgerton points out common hazards, such as poor road conditions, wildlife, and driver negligence, and calls for mutual respect between cyclists and motorists. He also champions for better driver education and the importance of cyclists asserting their rights on the road, promoting safer, more cooperative road-sharing practices to reduce risks and improve the experience for both groups.

Whose Lane Is It Anyway?: How Cyclists and Motorists Can Share the Roads Safely by Tom Edgerton is a thoughtful and uniquely diplomatic look at the delicate relationship between cyclists and drivers. Edgerton's writing style is conversational, and the result is a clear, accessible, and relatable resource that is both convincing and practical. I like the stories he shares on personal cycling experiences, and as a non-cycling driver, I feel like I have a greater respect for the hurdles cyclists are up against. I can honestly say I'm not an aggressive "black hat" driver, but I can see where simply being uninformed can mean breaches in etiquette, at best, and being pretty darn dangerous, at worst. I don't want to be either of those guys. Edgerton doesn’t just present a safety manual for readers; he encourages a shift in mindset toward shared responsibility on the road. Overall, this is a great, informative read that should be required as a part of driver education. Very highly recommended.
