Word Monsters by Mika Kishore is a children's story book that shares the writing struggles of a little girl named Anaiya. As Anaiya writes a letter to her friend, Lee, she wonders about how well she has done. Throughout the entire letter from Anaiya to Lee, there are many words along the way that would surely confuse any young mind. Word Monsters helps with understanding the use of homophones and homographs, making it easier to realize which word should be used in what context.

Word Monsters may very well be one of the most adorable little children’s educational workbooks I have ever seen. The story of Anaiya and her confusion over some of the wording makes for a very educational plot. The character of Anaiya is well developed, easy for a child to relate to, and addresses the natural insecurities a child may have about using proper grammar and spelling, as well as how others may react to the words they chose to use. I love Word Monsters because it encourages kids through example on how to use proper wording and makes learning to spell and read fun.

Mika Kishore has created a very well written story book that doubles as a lesson in homophones and homographs, which can be one of the most difficult parts of writing to master. The author includes an exercise at the end that allows the child reader to work out what they have learned and grasp the idea in a simple manner. I recommend Word Monsters by Mika Kishore as an addition to a language arts course for children or just a cute story to tell for encouragement. I would love to see more of these little stories, maybe with a few more worksheets attached for extra learning fun.
