War, The Lash Series: Book Three by Tara Fox Hall is a complex, emotional, historical fiction novel, introducing readers to World War II, combat strategies, and the emotional realities of war. Readers may often struggle to read historical novels because of a "boring" tone or style. This, however, is not the case with Tara Fox Hall's Book 3 of Lash. Providing the reader with a few fictitious, sci-fi, paranormal characters to accompany historical facts allows for readers to comprehend the plot in a more fun, exciting, and understandable way. Readers may find themselves deeply divided emotionally as they relate to the Lash character as he is tossed into a world of struggle and conflict; but also mentally and emotionally as he discovers the unpleasant realities mankind suffers through war.
Not having read the previous book in this series, an analysis of the Lash character is based on the third book. Lash appears to be a hard character, with a lack of patriotism, sympathy, and compassion. These characteristics become apparent at the very beginning of the book when the character struggles with why he should care about a war and people so far away. These characteristics are highly relatable to many people who have thought the same thing once or twice. The character's motive for proceeding into the unpleasantness of war is from necessity and obligation, as he searches for his old lover and a stubborn nephew.
As stated above, I have not read the previous 2 books in this series, but that has not detracted from my pleasure in reading in any way. This book was well written and researched, although for the timid or faint-hearted reader, this book may not be for you as it contains graphic details and unpleasant situations. Tara Fox Hall has written a terrific book - bravo!
