Carl Strom's 24 Hours (PIs Martin Brunner & Daniel Lakin Series Book 1) is a thriller about a crusty, weathered private detective named Martin Brunner and his young apprentice, David Lakin. They are hired by an arrogant, rich aristocrat, and his spoiled wife, the von Mullers, to bring back their kidnapped daughter, Kylee, a beautiful young model who happens to be a famous celebrity in the disco crowd. Set in Stockholm, Sweden, as the title implies our private investigators have only one day to bring Kylee von Muller back safely.
The story opens as Martin and Daniel go to a meet with the kidnappers. Things go sideways from there and through the use of flashbacks and vivid descriptions by Strom, we find out just how brutal the kidnappers are. Without giving too much away, let’s just say there is more here than meets the eye when it comes to Kylee’s family: Christian von Muller, the father; Kylee’s mother, Anne; and Kylee’s fiancé, Douglas. Add in a loved crazed mistress of Douglas's and we have an eclectic cast of characters who all have secrets that mesh together as the plot thickens. There are quite enough plot twists and turns that set up the climax as it builds with each chapter. We also learn of Martin’s sordid past and how he and Daniel happened to have met that gives a deeper layer to the plot. All in all, a darn fine thriller. I await Book 2.
