The T-Rex Who Wanted to Be a Long Neck, a children’s book written by Valerie Harmon and illustrated by Carol Stevens, is a story that will help children learn to control their anger. T-Rex has a terrible temper; it was so terrible it was out of control. T-Rex does not like seeing the destruction that results from his temper and, after observing a group of long necks enjoying life, he decides he wants to be just like them. T-Rex tries to be like them; however, he is unable to make his neck grow longer and it hurts to try to walk on all four legs. It is suggested to T-Rex that he should think about others and put others first and this will help him to feel better. T-Rex tries this suggestion and learns an important lesson.

Valerie Harmon’s children’s book, The T-Rex who Wanted to Be a Long Neck, is a cute story that children will not only enjoy, but they will also learn from it and be able to apply the lessons to their own lives. T-Rex is unhappy with how his anger is controlling him and, after seeing others living happier lives and not having issues with controlling their anger, he decides he wants to be just like the other dinosaurs. T-Rex learns that he has the ability to better himself and that he can change, but he does not need to be just like someone else in order to do so. This is a wonderful lesson for all children. I love the use of dinosaurs in this story as so many children (including my son!) are fascinated by dinosaurs and it adds a fun element to the lesson. Carol Stevens’ illustrations are vibrant and eye-catching; they correspond nicely with the text of the story. I highly recommend this book in teaching appropriate anger management.
