Have you ever gone down a path that led you somewhere completely unexpected? That’s exactly what happens to a group of young explorers in Capybaras: Guardians of the Jungle by Adam Koss. It begins as they set off on an ordinary field trip into the rainforest with their teacher, Professor Bananeira. After biking the edge of the forest for a while, they stop to take a swim in the river. Amazingly, a mysterious golden capybara named Kapi begins speaking to them. She seems to know something they don't. So they decide to follow her and discover secrets buried deep in the jungle. What starts out as a seemingly regular school trip quickly turns into a journey they will never forget. What did Kapi want them to see? And where will her mysterious path take them next?

Capybaras by Adam Koss is an imaginative adventure that will keep young readers engaged from beginning to end. I could easily see this book being turned into a series, like The Magic Tree House. I find capybaras so interesting, and that’s why I wanted to read about them. They are the largest rodents in the world and have surprisingly bristly fur. As an educator, I’d read one chapter a day until the book was finished, then have discussions about capybaras, conservation, and animal habitats. Students could do a rainforest animal research project or create their own jungle story as an extension activity. The artwork adds warmth and brings both the setting and its animal characters vividly to life. I enjoyed this story for its creativity, heart, and sense of wonder. Young book lovers who enjoy animal adventures will find a lot to love here. It's a fun, thoughtful, and enjoyable read that makes the 'to be continued' ending especially satisfying.
