Adam Cagley's 6-6-06 is a well-written novel about Grady Burton, a thirteen-year-old who is just finishing eighth grade in Buena Vista. The story begins on the last day of school, June 1st, 2006, when Grady and his close friends, Alex, Ruben, and Jordan, are targeted by a bully, Georgie Booker, and his crew. Grady and his friends are angry and plan on getting revenge. Sadly, what was meant to be a prank to scare Georgie turns out to be a disaster. Grady's parents send him to live with his grandparents, Mee-Moo and Pop-Pop, in a community called Sea Breeze Bluffs. At first, it just feels like discipline, but this is going to be Grady's biggest nightmare. The residents of the community are devoted to an ancient spider deity named Arachnea, and to show their devotion, they offer teenagers as sacrifice. Grady, knowing he will be next, must fight for his life alongside his friends, who help him in a desperate attempt to survive.
This book is flawlessly written and exceptional. It gave me chills, goosebumps, and creepy vibes as if I were part of Grady's adventure. As someone who is arachnophobic, I was able to feel every moment of tension and fear Grady felt and get a clear picture of the world brought to life in a detailed writing style. The character development is top-notch, and the pacing flows seamlessly. Many plot twists made this book hard to put down. While 6-6-06 is full of adventure and a touch of horror, I found it to be inspiring as well. One of the moral lessons is that retaliation and anger can have unforeseen or dangerous consequences; it also shows that friendship is defined by true loyalty and being ready to stand up for one another. I recommend 6-6-06 by Adam Cagley to readers who enjoy coming-of-age novels with adventure, action, and a touch of horror.
