Based on Zen principles, A Cup of Zen is a collection of 21 captivating flash fiction stories by Kai Tsukimi. A weary traveler encounters a kindly old man and discovers what's been dragging him along on his journey. An inquisitive young boy is full of questions as he watches a seasoned fisherman cast his net. A governor hosts two Zen masters from faraway lands and chooses the one who insults him as his teacher. A young monk travels in search of a renowned Zen master, only to discover the master can't remember his own name. A wealthy noble realizes the significance of imperfection after he witnesses the work of a master calligrapher. A man who left his home years ago in pursuit of wisdom returns to his village and finds menial work fulfilling.
A Cup of Zen is a thought-provoking anthology. These tales not only entertain but also leave you with a lot to ponder. Inspired by the philosophy of Zen Buddhism, each story in this collection comes with a nugget of wisdom or a life lesson. Kai Tsukimi's storytelling is a work of art. The author wastes no words and draws you in from the get-go, spinning absorbing narratives you find yourselves immersed in from start to finish. Tsukimi's ability to create an atmosphere using a few words is simply masterful. These stories almost feel like short fables or folk tales. At the end of each story, you will find reflection questions and a few stimulating insights on the central themes of the respective tale. It's a fantastic collection for short story lovers.
