A Mermaid’s Tale from the Sammi Jo Adventure is a delightful children’s picture book by Dede Stockton. Sammi Jo was anxious to see the surprise her friend Screech promised her. She hopped on his back and they dove deep into the sea. Sammi Jo saw many spectacular sea creatures, corals, and plants. Then a beautiful mermaid with long swirly hair appeared from behind a plant. Her name was Princess Kirstin and she was Screech’s surprise. Sammi Jo liked the princess who made her feel welcome. She even got to ride a majestic seahorse named Natasha and agreed not to tell anyone that seahorses are real. Natasha took her to a golden door where Princess Kirsten waited for them. The Princess had another special surprise for Sammi Jo. She was greeted by mermaids who were mostly her age. Princess Kirsten explained that they had to do chores and homework just like Sammi Jo. Screech eventually returned to take his friend home, much to her disappointment.
Sammi Jo makes friends easily and certainly loves a good adventure. All the characters are fun-loving and adorable. This story in a poem by Dede Stockton has a lively rhyming flow that matches Gaspar Sabater’s amazing colorful illustrations. Children will also be able to see and learn about some of the things that are found in the ocean. A Mermaid’s Tale, book 2 from the Sammi Jo Adventure Series will become a popular picture book among small readers. I liked reading it.
