"A Tale of Spirit: Yours, Mine and Lessons from the Universe" by Doris Mae Honer consists of a collection of anecdotes and life stories. The narrative (which covers a wide terrain including, among other things, an encounter with spirit children, the meaning of omens, and claiming one’s spiritual power) is mesmerizing. While I went through Honer’s skillful storytelling I felt as if an old friend was narrating the events in the story to me. Honer’s vivid recollections of her life from childhood to adulthood invited me to inhabit the worlds she writes about in a visceral way. I felt I knew the people and places described. Her eye for details and ear for language is superb. Each story is often well-dramatized with good dialogue, helping the people she writes about to come to life.
The structure of the book is such that each chapter begins with an illuminating epigraph. As some of the quotes presented are Honer’s own, I also enjoyed a glimpse into her wisdom about life. The book primarily focuses on spirituality and I felt the stories taught me to be open to the messages brought forth by the natural and spiritual realms. I was impressed by the way Honer explained some abstract ideas such as “humankind’s spiritual power” through experiences drawn from her own life. The whole book is built that way and the use of concrete illustrations adds to the fine pacing.
