In the fourth installment of the Sgt. Windflower Mystery series, A Twist of Fortune, author Mike Martin continues his excellent mystery series in fine fashion. Follow the experiences of Sgt. Winston Windflower in both his personal and professional life in Grand Bank, Newfoundland in Canada. His girlfriend, Sheila, is leading the group of locals trying desperately to stop the closing of the town's largest employer. Windflower is simply trying his best to stay out of the fray, all the while investigating the dead bodies found in a car and fighting the invincible snowstorm on its way.

I very much enjoyed A Twist of Fortune. It is a simply delightful read. More of a meandering story than an overly hyper, action packed roller coaster of a ride, the pace is such a refreshing change from the recent offerings in this genre that it's almost a shock to the senses. Sgt. Windflower isn't some crazy detective, barreling independently through backstreets, half-cocked and wild. He feels like a real police officer, methodical, careful, thorough and genuine. That's not to say that this book is dull, or slow-paced, it's certainly not. But it isn't written so frenetically that you hardly know where you are in the story.

I have to commend author Mike Martin for his magnificent abilities in drawing settings and characters; his descriptions are so vividly drawn that the reader will actually feel a part of the scene and as if you know the characters personally. If that isn't the hallmark of a fantastic writer, I don't know what is. A Twist of Fortune is a book that would be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys mysteries, or just a great book, and I highly recommend it. This is the first book that I've read by author Mike Martin, but I can guarantee, it will not be the last.
