Abraham, a man with Native American and Caucasian ancestry, was a Vietnam veteran and an alcoholic. His wife Kristal had recently left him, and he had minimal contact with his two adult children. When Helen Sparks, a congresswoman from Washington State, went missing, along with her boyfriend, Charlie Abraham was charged with their murders. He had had an interaction with the couple a few days earlier, and an alcoholic blackout prevented him from providing a needed alibi. The trial had some intriguing moments - how the prosecutor was able to introduce questions to pique the jurors' personal prejudices towards Native Americans and alcoholics was revealing of continued biases in this country. In the murder mystery Abraham’s Burden, penned by Joseph Crew, a compelling plot unfolds.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this work is the illumination of the difficulties many alcoholics face. Like Charlie, some alcoholics are not able to deal with a despicable personal experience, turning the memory into shame and low self-esteem. They then use alcohol to dull the pain. Charlie is also an honorable and likable person in many ways, like most alcoholics. The strong support he received from family and friends during the trial is a testament to this. The reader will also learn more about Washington State, including its beautiful landscapes, political issues, and the difficulties Native Americans face. Author Joseph Crew has written an excellent murder mystery in Abraham’s Burden. There is a great deal of interesting content that will engage every reader from the first page to the last!
