"An Atmosphere of Angels" by H C Turk is thoughtful science fiction. That doesn’t mean it is not exciting as there is plenty of ‘edge of your seat’ action. The book is about more mature characters with histories and experience, the central two of whom are financial anthropologist Parno Hadjara and Earth Nations United representative Kathlynn Shumard. So when odd little things start happening during their prospecting visit to planet Kapnos 3, which has the ether ore that Earth urgently needs for its interstellar travel program, they know it is possibly serious. They meet indigenes who offer to barter for the ore, but the two Terrans are deceived. Parno and Kathlynn become trapped on a space vessel that is deserted, its crew having been murdered. But there is a ghost still there who needs to kill these two intruders to find peace.
There are many strengths to this book. The characters show enough complexity and extract our interest and empathy. Another is the author’s style. H C Turk has a winning way with prose that is packed with imagery and momentum. There are occasional passages that stop you in your tracks with their aptness and beauty. Tension, horror, hope, romance - they are all created with powerful language. The plot is original, bringing supernatural and romantic elements into science fiction, making this a very appealing read. The twenty-third century setting is well-created and suitably presented with plenty of plausible new technology to think about and become familiar with. The book moves at a good pace, yet allowing time for reflection, and, in summary, is a very impressive novel indeed.
