In Artificial Agent by J.W. Jarvis, Commander Michael Cooling is a second-generation military achiever, leading a team of specialized covert operatives into international battles. But with the reward for his success comes the devastating loss of anonymity alongside a high public profile, hindering Michael’s style of leadership and isolating him from the action. The work of a fearsome enemy puts Michael’s team in danger, with devastating consequences. A careful trap, fuelled by hatred and a dangerous vendetta, detonates Michael’s military career and leaves his survival in doubt. He’s spent his entire career as a team member, only to find himself battling alone. By accepting the kind of help that promises to turn his physical weakness into his greatest superpower, Michael reaches for his hidden inner strength and his most trusted friends to finally defeat America’s vilest opponent.
What I liked most about Artificial Agent by J.W. Jarvis was the fast-paced action, which throws the main characters from one life-threatening situation into the next with no time to catch their breath. I appreciated the depth of the scientific descriptions of bionics and their fascinating effect on the human frame. The prevalent theme of restoration permeates throughout the novel, both for Michael physically and in terms of the revival of his lost relationships. I enjoyed the locational gems, including Necker Island with its vibrant descriptions of the British Virgin Islands. The antagonist is both cunning and dastardly, and J.W. Jarvis does a wonderful job of portraying him as an insurmountable foe. I grew up on Steve Austen as the Six Million Dollar Man, and this could make a great contemporary rerun.
