In Axel's Adventure: Back to School with Type 1 Diabetes by Thomas Budnick, Axel has just been diagnosed with this illness. He is now afraid of school because his friends may laugh at him. His mom suggests that he teach his friends about the Type 1 diabetes he has been diagnosed with, so he does exactly as his mom says. At school his friends ask him question after question about his new situation, so Axel starts talking to his classmates and teaching them about his condition and what he needs to do throughout the day to keep his blood sugar levels normal.
I love this sweet book about Axel as he faces his fear of what his friends and classmates will think about his Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Thomas Budnick does an amazing job as he explains in detail this important medical condition. Children will have a much better understanding of this disease after reading Axel's Adventure: Back to School with Type 1 Diabetes. Axel and the other characters tell the story so well, with simplicity yet with clear understanding. A fun fact is that Axel is a real person who has T1D, and his father dedicates this book to his son. Lana Lee is the person behind the colorful, vibrant, and detailed illustrations, bringing this story to life in a beautiful way. I love the characters and the expressions on their faces. Axel's adventure would be a fabulous addition to your child's library. I think that in any elementary school classroom, library, or daycare center, children would benefit from having this book that will educate them about Type 1 Diabetes.
