Baby Steps: Becoming the Mom That I Needed by Sheryl Recinos is a well-written memoir that covers themes of courage, the importance of not giving up, having self-worth, and ending trauma cycles. It talks about Sheryl Recinos's personal experiences and journey throughout the early stages of her motherhood. After giving birth to her daughter, Roxana, Sheryl struggles with homelessness, abandonment, and rejection. She receives support from people like Mario, who takes her into his home, and Dr. Broudy, a kind pediatrician who helped her through childbirth. She shares how she remained resilient throughout her hardships and her determination to see that her daughter gets a much better life than she did. The book shows how Sheryl faced life challenges, mostly relying on herself and with little to no help from her family.

Baby Steps shows Sheryl Recinos's impressive internal transformation and struggle to be a good mother. I love how the author shares her heartbreaking moments, especially the early stages of motherhood. It shows her strength and faith in the future. The writing was emotional, honest, and authentic. I loved how detailed she was. This memoir made me reflect on issues that plague the real world, like societal bias and prejudice, poverty, and lack of access to adequate healthcare as a result of poverty. I became emotionally attached to the author as I could feel her pain, and I admired her resilience as well. The subject matter of motherhood and raising a child makes this book a good read for mothers or readers who intend to become mothers. It will give them hope and build quiet strength and confidence in themselves, especially on how to make the best of their lives while raising children.
