Back Pocket: Tools to Help Parents Nurture Their Teens' Mental Health by Shaney Andler is written with such clarity and warmth that it instantly feels like a trusted guide. As a parent to teens, this book arrived at just the right moment, and I was able to implement her practical and immediately useful advice. One of the most impactful techniques I applied was the use of distraction to help shift focus away from stress, namely, the absolutely brilliant and simple activity of holding ice, which was proven to be surprisingly effective. Andler’s approach goes a long way in getting parents to engage with teens by involving them in decisions, and I recognized areas where I can be better at positive reinforcement and the creation of an encouraging environment. There was nothing I came across that was anything but approachable and empowering. Overall, the book’s gentle tone and straightforward tools are an essential support for parents wanting to nurture their teens’ mental well-being in everyday life. Very highly recommended.
