In Be Selfish: Live the Golden Rule, Richard Gephardt, a former congressman, writes about a lesson his mother taught him as a child: treat others the way you would like to be treated. Her advice is part of the Golden Rule. He says she believed that asking others questions and listening to their answers is a simple way to show respect. Gephardt points out that many religions teach the same concept, but use different words to describe it. He then looks back on his personal life, political career, and professional experiences to suggest that the Golden Rule can also work in your favor. He recalls all the time he spent speaking directly with people in his district during his years in politics. Gephardt recounts that he built stronger connections simply by listening to them. The book also explores how these ideas can apply beyond individuals to workplaces and even countries.
Be Selfish by Richard Gephardt took a familiar lesson and explained it from a different angle. Most people think of the Golden Rule as purely selfless, but Gephardt argued that it can also serve a person’s best interests. His writing is clear and easy to read. It felt like he was sitting across from me and we were just having a conversation over coffee. He had a lot of different personal stories, but the ones with his mother were my favorites. Her advice was important to him. This book reminded me that even small acts of respect and kindness can make a real difference. As a teacher, I see how it relates to my job. I have often asked children to think about how certain words or actions make others feel. Anyone looking for books about personal development, leadership, and life lessons will want to pick this one up. The real-world examples keep things moving, and readers will find it easy to finish in a short amount of time. It puts a fresh spin on a well-known idea.
