Becoming Carly Klein by Elizabeth Harlan follows the story of a headstrong sixteen-year-old girl named Carly Klein. Despite her privileged upbringing, Carly feels neglected by her self-absorbed parents and lashes out in unpredictable ways. A sophomore at Baxter Girls High School, Carly develops a crush on one of her mother's therapy patients, Daniel. Daniel is a blind student at Columbia, trying to gain a prestigious scholarship. After a disastrous stint at a camp in Colorado, Carly returns home and somehow manages to introduce herself to Daniel as a painter named Serena. Soon, Carly unwittingly becomes involved in a romantic relationship with Daniel. However, she struggles to comprehend the complexities of such a dysfunctional relationship. Now, with a broken heart, can Carly pull herself together and get her life back on track?
A coming-of-age story filled with heart, humor, and drama, Becoming Carly Klein follows a young girl's pursuit of self-discovery. Author Elizabeth Harlan touches upon themes of first love, parental neglect, and teenage rebellion in this entertaining tale about growing up. It's primarily a character-driven drama featuring a young adult protagonist who goes through all the trials and tribulations of being a teenager struggling with feelings of love, neglect, and seeking a sense of belonging. Feeling abandoned by her parents, Carly seeks love and attention in all the wrong places. The way Carly acts and talks makes her feel like an actual teenager. I especially enjoyed her conversations with Lauren. Harlan's storytelling is also funny at times. I chuckled out loud multiple times while reading the book. Readers of young adult fiction will love this coming-of-age novel.
