Hannah is new to Fermosa Bay, and she promised her mother that she would try to make a new life there and give the people a chance. Even the men. She joined a book club, attended parties, and made a few friends, so she was fulfilling her promise, right? At least in spirit. Bigalow by Iris Blobel is Hannah’s story of starting over and finding comfort in unexpected places. A surprise appearance by a man she’s never met—inside her car—changed the trajectory of her life. Bigalow attempts to change her belief that a life of solitude is good for her, and she is a stubborn one, fighting it every step of the way. But slowly she starts to enjoy life, and then she meets her neighbor, Gideon, who forces her to admit to what else she’s been missing in life.

Bigalow is an interesting read, and it’s a bit different than what I expected from the book description. Bigalow is an enigma, and he frustrates Hannah every step of the way, which adds an element of humor to the story that keeps it fun and light. The more she asks the right questions, the more she grows. That is the beauty of this story: watching Hannah grow and get comfortable with her new life. She’s so repressed at the start of the story, and Bigalow helps with that, but the way she opens up around Gideon is heartwarming, and you can’t help but root for her. This is, overall, just a really fun story, and I enjoy Iris Blobel’s style of storytelling.
