Bloodline by Scott Alan Wade is a horror story to end all horror stories. Set in Las Vegas, in the bright lights of the brightest city on earth, the night is an unsafe place to be. Who knows what walks amongst us? Victor is a member of The Family, all of whom suffer with an affliction to the light. Together with his right-hand man, Thomas Gage, he builds up the family business, but is sent to deal with a new business in Macau. Taking his place is Marcus, a younger member of the family who, at first, shows interest in the business. Until the night that he and Thomas are shot. Slowly, imperceptibly at first, Marcus begins to change. He loses interest in the family business and starts to spend his time partying. A series of unexplained murders stretch across the city and, soon enough, Thomas’ sister Lizzie is drawn into the madness. How far will Marcus go? What is the family secret? And can Thomas and Victor stop Marcus before he goes too far?

Bloodline by Scott Alan Wade was, well, just wow! When I first started to read this, I found it a little too full of information and rather long. But, and this is a big but, I could not stop reading it. There was lots of information in it, including some historical facts that were quite interesting and the storyline itself was unique with great characters. For some reason, every time I put the book down, I found myself going back to it, just to read another couple of pages, just to see what happened next. I can’t put my finger on it, but there is something about this book that makes for compelling reading and I don’t think I would be the only one to say that. It is a little long but you soon come to realise that the information in it is necessary. So, well done, Mr Wade, and I hope to see more from you in the future.

In Scott Alan Wade’s Bloodline, the reader is treated to a little bit of everything; the supernatural, friendship, family, corporate sabotage, and a little romance. In this story set in Las Vegas, we meet Thomas, an average guy who works at a luxurious resort. After rescuing a co-worker from a potential assault, he is noticed by the CEO of the corporation, Victor. Victor takes Thomas under his wing, where he notices the peculiarities of his employer. Victor only comes out at night and has superhuman strength. Victor reveals that his family has a genetic mutation that led to the origin of the vampire legends. Hoping that Thomas would take over the resort, Victor is informed by the family corporation that his nephew Marcus is being assigned to manage the resort. Once Marcus takes over, all is well until a fateful accident occurs, hospitalizing them both. Upon Marcus’ release, something changes in him and chaos ensues.

I applaud Scott Alan Wade for altering the vampire genre in Bloodline. I was expecting a light fearing, blood sucking monster. Instead, we have Victor and Marcus, polar opposites, yet tied by family blood. Victor’s character charmed me with his warm and welcoming presence, and Marcus played the perfect villain. I adored both of them, sympathizing with Thomas when the latter becomes nothing but a nuisance. With a story like this one, you need a larger than life backdrop, making Las Vegas an ideal setting. I recommend this thrilling page turner to any supernatural fan.

Bloodline is a supernatural horror novel by Scott Alan Wade, which centres on the character of Thomas Gage, who works as the go-to man for a mysterious figure called Victor Hill. Set amidst the backdrop of the casino scene in fabulous Las Vegas, suspicion builds around Victor as Thomas learns of his peculiar aversion to sunlight and the ancient and powerful lineage of his family. The mythology surrounding the strange creatures Hollywood has come to call vampires is revealed to Thomas in a whole new light, and with it our hero becomes embroiled in a dangerous world of blood, power and politics when the temperamental and uncontrollable Marcus Hill arrives on the scene.

It’s clear that Scott Alan Wade is extremely familiar with the minutiae of the world of Las Vegas, and fans of the paradise of sinners and saints will surely relish the attention to detail he gives the story’s location. For me, Bloodline might have been a full five star read if these overly-detailed moments had been a little fewer and further between. I enjoyed the build up to the reveal of information about the Night Dwellers and their strange, often brutal ways, and the backdrop of the story provides plenty to feed the imagination. Wade’s characters fit the bill for what you’d expect in an action-packed and largely masculine story, and the plot is slick and full of interesting turns and twists. Overall, fans of the likes of From Dusk Til Dawn should find Bloodline to be a highly enjoyable read.
