Brave doesn't always mean you're never scared—sometimes it's about finding courage when you need it most. In Bowe Balhoff’s delightfully sweet picture book, Brave Enough, we meet Atlan, a boy who’s almost five and pretty brave. He sleeps in the dark and even rides his bike without training wheels. But a whole week away at Granny's farm? That’s a different kind of scary, but he affirms, “I can be brave enough…I can do this.” With each new farm animal he meets, Atlan’s fear causes him to imagine transforming into something small and timid, like a snail, a field mouse, and even a lizard. But with Granny’s advice, he learns to take a deep breath, try to see things differently, and to rely on his friends. The illustrations are bright and colorful, making them the perfect complement to the story and a joy for young readers to look at. It's a fantastic story that will leave young readers feeling empowered and ready to face their fears.
As an educator, I loved the positive message in Brave Enough, written and illustrated by Bowe Balhoff. Many kids often feel scared, like Atlan, when they must face something new, like being away from their parents or meeting a new person. The story also does a great job of explaining to kids that it's okay to feel scared, and that bravery can be found by slowing down, breathing, and looking at things in a new way. It’s also a good story for classroom discussions on being brave, being kind, and could be used to discuss the farm, too. The animals are all lovable, and kids will be engaged with the pictures of them, but I love how the deer are a bit shy. This is a story that will resonate with children and the adults who read with them.
