Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote, "Home is the nicest word there is." That’s exactly what Brownie, a stray dog, hopes for in Brownie’s Adventures: Island Tales of a Dog from Trinidad by Manuela Giger. Every day, she wanders the beaches and sidewalks of Trinidad, hungry not just for food, but also for love. It took a long time, but eventually she was taken in by a family near the ocean. She immediately and proudly stepped into her new role as a loyal guardian and friend. She then spent her time being mischievous yet helpful, doing activities like aiding tiny turtles in reaching the sea, sneaking tasty treats from neighborhood kitchens, and chasing lizards. Through it all, Brownie’s curious, bold, and sometimes stubborn personality shines lovingly.
I experienced a sense of calm as I was reading Brownie’s Adventures: Island Tales of a Dog from Trinidad by Manuela Giger. The writing is warm, sincere, and quite personal. As an educator, I think it could be used to have discussions with students about responsibility, caring for animals, beach habitats, and helping others. It could also be extended with activities centered on kids writing their own pet tale or researching how to protect ocean creatures, as Brownie did for the turtles. The watercolor-like illustrations by Gabriella D’Abreau are soft and detailed, bringing the local setting to life and making the pup more endearing. Anyone who loves stories about dogs will be smiling their way through these pages. It’s simple, heartfelt, and easy to connect with, even if you don’t have a dog.
