What does it actually mean when someone claims a Christian is “known by their fruits”? In his theological study By Their Fruits, You Shall Know Them, author James Rondinone links the message of his book to that single question. The author covers the ways that many churches have used outward behavior to judge salvation. He then turns directly to Scripture to test whether actions such as speaking in tongues, baptism, or giving can actually determine eternal standing. As the argument develops, the author contrasts visible conduct with faith in Christ, drawing a distinction between a believer’s daily walk and the moment salvation is received. The book moves toward one central claim: outward acts may reveal obedience, but they do not decide whether salvation has been granted in Scripture itself.

James Rondinone’s By Their Fruits, You Shall Know Them is extremely well timed, especially as we continue to see present-day disputes inside churches about what, if anything, visibly proves that someone belongs to the faith. The book clearly explains why those disagreements continue to shape denominations and church practice today. The writing is notably easy to follow, even for readers who do not come from a Christian background. Every argument is convincing. One of the greater examples is the extended use of Paul’s letters to explain salvation as faith in Christ’s death and resurrection, followed later by a section dedicated to baptism as a public declaration of that belief. Well written and intelligently presented, readers interested in theology, church history, or how religious doctrine is formed will find this especially worthwhile, and its significance lies in showing how interpretation itself shapes faith communities. Very highly recommended.
