Cuba, Your Children Cry/ Cuba, tus hijos lloran by Otto H. Iglesias is a memoir about one man’s journey to connect with his origins. Otto was born in Florida in the 1970s. He was always enthralled by his parents’ stories about their life in Cuba and having to flee their beloved country after the revolution. He grew up with an insatiable curiosity about the island where his parents had lived. In November 2016, 46-year-old Otto made his dream come true and visited Cuba for the first time. With detailed, handwritten notes and maps from his parents, he set out with two friends to discover Cuba both as a tourist and also as the child of refugee parents. In 2018, Otto realized his dream of returning to Cuba for a second time with his parents and sister.
Otto H. Iglesias writes with enthusiasm and excitement that is contagious. His love for Cuba and pride in that country shine through in his descriptions of each city and town he visits. The photographs from his trips give the readers a visual account of Cuba which made it more personal for me. It was most touching to see pictures of his parents on the bench where his father asked his mother to be his girlfriend. I learned a lot about the history of Cuba and got a glimpse into what pre-revolution Cuba was like for the people living there. Cuba, Your Children Cry is a beautiful and sentimental testament to a son’s love for his family, roots, heritage, and history.
