In Danny's Ten Dollars by Nathan Lacos, a kid named Danny is spending his summer working very hard. One hot day, he mows his neighbor’s lawn. The elderly man gives him ten dollars for the job. Danny is so excited. He tells Mr. Bennet there’s so much he can do with it. A few things come to mind, like a monster truck, a computer, an ice cream cone, and more. He takes his time and really thinks about the best choice. Danny picks something small for himself and his sister, then decides to save what’s left. But he soon finds himself rethinking those plans. The book also features discussion questions, coloring pages, and reflection exercises. So, what does Danny do with the rest of his money?
I would describe Danny's Ten Dollars by Nathan Lacos as heart-warming. He was a lovable character, and I became more proud of him as the story progressed. The rhyming text was easy to read and will help keep young learners interested from beginning to end. As a teacher, I really appreciated the activities included at the end of the book. I especially liked the discussion questions because they give kids a chance to connect Danny’s tale with their own lives. I would begin conversations with my students about responsibility, charity, and kindness. As a follow-up activity, I would have them write about a time they put someone else's needs before their own. The illustrations are bright and colorful while also bringing a sense of calm to the pages. Danny’s journey was truly touching. Anyone looking for a children’s book about generosity and making good choices will want to pick this one up.
