Daughter of the Song is a work of magical paranormal fiction penned for young adults by author Eliza Tilton. The opening book in the Unholy Magic Saga, this dark fantasy tale takes place in historical England and Wales to give a British flair to the action. Arabella Grace is our magical heroine, who escapes the clutches of occultists and moves to the seemingly quiet town of Port Talbot, South Wales to escape her nightmarish memories. But when the energy of the town awakens Arabella’s hidden powers, trouble begins to brew, and waves of beings from deep underground are ready to be raised again.
Growing up in South Wales myself, I loved the historical mining town and all its cultural details first and foremost. It makes a suitably spooky and stark backdrop for the interesting and fast-paced plot which author Eliza Tilton has developed, with a terrifying gamut of discoveries and challenges for poor young Arabella to run through. The magical lore is also well developed, which leaves plenty of room for scope in future books, and the presence of dark magic such as necromancy gives a horror edge to the paranormal goings-on that I really enjoyed. Arabella herself is a relatable heroine who begins to come of age during the tale, discovering not only her magical talents but her emotional maturity amongst the people whom she tries to learn to trust. Overall, Daughter of the Song is certain to please YA fantasy readers who are seeking something gothic and exciting.
