Deadly Thanksgiving: A Senior Sleuth Cozy Mystery - Book 2 by Maureen Fisher opens with a tense scene as sisters Clara and Abby await the arrival of the Lifestyle Manor bus and a group of visitors whose positive reviews might save Grizzly Gulch from foreclosure. Clara is horrified to discover one senior citizen, Lizzie, is not just sleeping, but dead. Moreover, her ex, Hawk MacDougall, arrives with the investigating team. The ladies swing into action, trying to uncover the killer before the scandal ruins their business venture. Could it be Gabby the activity coordinator, Eleanor the clinging lover, her patient beau Wayne, or aging womanizer Roland? Who else is shooting at Minnie and sabotaging hotel operations?
Deadly Thanksgiving by Maureen Fisher combines the best of cozy mystery, black comedy romp, and third-age romance. The main character Clara was easy to identify with. Her desire to succeed with her investment in the hospitality business and reluctance to open up to a new romance after a life of abuse were understandable. I enjoyed sifting through the cast of characters, each harboring their not-so-innocent secrets. I laughed at the bodily function humor and wry acknowledgment of the effects of aging. The inclusion of domestic animals was a master stroke that added humor and interest! The petty squabbles and jealousies of a closed community of aged care residents were well delineated. I enjoyed the way their machinations mirrored the cliques that develop among adolescents and demonstrated the seniors were also young at heart. This is a fun holiday-themed mystery that reminded me of Agatha Christie's “Miss Marple” series with contemporary touches.
