Death By Drama: A Josiah Reynolds Mystery is a sleuth/cozy mystery novel written by Abigail Keam. While this is the eleventh book in Keam’s Josiah Reynolds mystery series, the author gives readers enough background information to allow them to enjoy this book as a standalone. Who could have guessed that being part of a theatrical company could lead to such an upheaval in the bucolic lives of Josiah Reynolds and her friends? When Madison Smythe collapsed in Hunter Wickliffe’s manor house, where the play was being rehearsed, her fellow actors assumed she had fallen ill. After it became apparent that she had died, the police took Hunter’s brother, Franklin, into custody after other members of the troupe had shared the facts of Franklin’s dislike of Madison. Josiah’s first instinct was to call her daughter, Asa, in London and get her on a plane back to Kentucky. Asa was an ace investigator and Franklin’s best chance at surviving a charge of first-degree murder, which in Kentucky could mean a death sentence.
Abigail Keam’s sleuth/cozy murder mystery, Death By Drama: A Josiah Reynolds Mystery, is an engaging and entertaining whodunit, which is well written and fairly brimming with red herrings for armchair sleuths to consider. Who killed Madison Smythe and why? As Asa and her mother try to ferret out the truth, it soon becomes apparent that the deceased lead actress was indeed not beloved by all. Each revelation, however, seemed to make finding the real killer even more difficult than it was before. Keam’s plot is agreeably reminiscent of classic drawing-room detective novels, and her characters work so very well together. Death By Drama: A Josiah Reynolds Mystery is most highly recommended.
