"The Death of a Shrinking Violet" by James Robinson, Jr. is an eclectic collection of essays and that word should prepare you for such diverse topics as becoming and being a grandfather, marriage, great movies and Sam's club, sleep and so many more. James gives you a broad analysis of them all, with much humor and sarcastic criticism. In essays entitled 'Take the Shot', 'They Call Me Pap' and 'So, What Do You Do'? you will find an honest look at the world in which we live, with all the idiosyncrasy you could desire. James further attracts attention with considerably informative overviews of movies such as "Jaws", "Forrest Gump" and "Tootsie" with his favorite characters and stars including Cassius Clay and Tom Cruise among others. He chooses them as his choices of all-time bests. This book is an easy read and if you do not find a nugget of interest among the pages, I would say that perhaps you are hard to please. This is a little book bound to entertain and satisfy anyone looking for a little light reading.
James Robinson's humor abounds, but at times, I found it somewhat sardonic. I could have done without his very descriptive details of his surgery - my personal preference only. Less information would have been a plus, but then it is only one negative among a host of positives.
