Baseball is the name of the game in Matt Christopher's District Doubleheader. Liam and Carter are struggling with different problems. On one hand, Liam is having a rough time, and his faults and misses are making him really work hard to prove who he is for his team. On the other hand, Carter is pitching like a pro...until Rachel shows up and steals his spotlight just for being a girl...or maybe it's because she's a great pitcher?
I have to admit that I am not a big baseball fan. I wanted to try something that was a little outside of my comfort zone so I'm not in a rut with my reading. I am really glad that I gave District Doubleheader by Matt Christopher a chance. While my preferred sport is hockey, and I usually despise baseball, the story wasn't too bogged down with sports-lingo and fan-girling. Liam, Rachel, and Carter were really easy characters to relate to. While much of the time I was left questioning their judgement and wondering "Why!!!" you could understand what was going on in their heads almost at all times, which lent credibility to the story. You also really get to "feel" for them as people. I love it when I feel like I know characters better than some of my own friends. The target audience will be able to really identify with topics and characters in District Doubleheader.
