A teenage psychic ignores notes from an anonymous admirer until she realizes her life could be in danger in the thrilling young adult paranormal novel, Dying Thoughts: Fifth Secret by Joey Paul. Sixteen-year-old Tara Leverton has a secret neither she nor her dad wants the world to know. Gifted with the ability to see the last moments of people's lives, Tara works with the police to solve unexplained deaths and murders. Recently, Tara was responsible for saving the life of her best friend, Kaolin. After Tara gives her statement and leaves the police station, she discovers a strange note in her bag. The author states he knows her secret. Stunned by the contents but deciding it isn't worth upsetting everybody, Tara puts the note aside and doesn't tell anyone. However, the notes keep coming, and Tara begins to worry that she may be in danger. Concerned that if she tells her dad, he will never leave her alone, Tara determines to find out who her stalker is without involving him or the police. But is she already too late?
Dying Thoughts: Fifth Secret by Joey Paul is an extraordinary young adult novel enhanced with a spooky paranormal element. With a snarky heroine and a suspenseful plot, it is a riveting mystery that doesn't disappoint. Even though Tara's character is obstinate, I admire how she is beginning to mature and is actively working on her attitude. I absolutely love this series and look forward to reading more of Tara's escapades. Although it is the fifth book in the series, it does very well as a standalone, keeping the reader up to date with the previous books without inundating them with superfluous backstory. This outstanding novel will charm and delight everyone who loves a good mystery filled with suspense, drama, and an unorthodox protagonist.
